WHAT IS POVERTY?

Poverty simply put is that people cannot afford the basic needs of life.

Extent of poverty in the UK – 2017/2018

14.3 million people in poverty.
Of which:
8.3 million are working adults.
4.6 million are children.
1.3 million are of pensionable age.

Conclusion

Around 22% of the population is in poverty.
Around 34% of children are in poverty.
Around 49% of those in poverty are in “persistent” poverty.
(ie, below the poverty line in at least 2 of the last 3 years)

THE SOLUTION? – UNIVERSAL CREDIT

May 2019 – 1,759000 people claimed Universal Credit.
Of these, 59.57% had deductions made.
Of these, 19.65% had deductions of more than 20% of their payment often to repay loans made during the 5 week wait period!

In the last 5 years, food  bank use in the TRUSSELL TRUST network alone has increased by 73%.
